Walvis Bay Wildlife Through the Seasons

Walvis Bay is one of the best places in southern Africa to see marine and bird life, and there’s something to see every month. Here’s what to look for and when.

All Year

  • Cape fur seals: Tens of thousands live at Pelican Point.
  • Dolphins: Heaviside’s and bottlenose dolphins are seen in the bay throughout the year.
  • Flamingos: Greater and lesser flamingos feed in the lagoon all year, though numbers vary.
  • Pelicans and cormorants: Common around the harbour and the bay.

Whale Season

Whales are most often seen in the second half of the year, as they pass along the coast. Southern right whales and humpback whales are among those spotted.

Seal Pupping Season

Seal pups are born toward the end of the year, and the colony is at its busiest in the months that follow.

Summer Migrants

In the summer months, migratory birds arrive from the northern hemisphere, making the lagoon even busier.

Summer Visitors at Sea

In the warmer months, sunfish (mola mola) are sometimes seen from boats in the bay.
