Walvis Bay Lagoon: Where to See the Flamingos
The Walvis Bay lagoon is one of the most important wetlands in southern Africa. Its shallow, food-rich waters attract huge numbers of birds, and the star attraction is the flamingos. Thousands of them feed along the shoreline, often just metres from the promenade.
Why the Lagoon Is So Special
The lagoon is sheltered from the Atlantic by the Pelican Point sand spit, and its shallow waters and mudflats are rich in the tiny organisms that birds feed on. The wetland is recognised as a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, and it supports a huge number of resident and migratory birds.
Flamingos at Walvis Bay
Two species of flamingo feed in the lagoon:
- Greater flamingos: The larger of the two, paler in colour, with a pink bill tipped in black.
- Lesser flamingos: Smaller and a deeper pink, with a dark red bill.
Flamingos can be seen here all year, but their numbers rise and fall with the seasons and with conditions elsewhere in southern Africa.
Other Birds to Look For
Bring binoculars and you’ll see far more than flamingos. Look out for:
- Great white pelicans
- Cormorants
- Pied avocets
- Terns and gulls
- Many kinds of waders, especially in the summer months when migrants arrive from the northern hemisphere
Where to See the Flamingos
- The lagoon promenade: A walkway runs along the edge of the lagoon. It’s an easy, flat walk with some of the best flamingo viewing in town.
- The road south: The road past the lagoon toward the salt works has more good spots to stop and look.
- On a tour: 4×4 tours to Pelican Point and Sandwich Harbour usually stop to see the flamingos along the way.
Best Time of Day
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times. The light is soft for photos, the promenade is quiet, and the birds are often actively feeding. Low tide can bring birds closer to the shore as they feed on the exposed mudflats.
Tips for Watching Birds
- Move slowly and keep your distance, so the birds keep feeding
- Don’t chase or disturb flocks for photos
- Bring binoculars or a zoom lens
- Wear a warm layer, as mornings by the water can be chilly
Make a Day of It
The lagoon is a short drive from the Waterfront. Start with coffee at La Vida Coffee House, take a morning dolphin and seal cruise, then spend the afternoon walking the lagoon promenade. Finish with sundowners at Pirates Wreck Sports Bar & Grill.
