Dune 7, Walvis Bay: Climbing and Sandboarding Guide
Dune 7 is one of the tallest dunes in the Walvis Bay area and one of the easiest big dunes in Namibia to visit. It’s just outside town, there’s no need for a 4×4, and the view from the top across the desert is well worth the climb.
Where Is Dune 7?
Dune 7 is a short drive east of Walvis Bay, just off the main road inland. It’s easy to reach by car, and the sandy area at its base has a picnic spot shaded by palm trees.
Climbing Dune 7
The climb is short but steep. Walking up soft sand is hard work, so take your time and follow the ridge, where the sand is usually firmer. Most people take 30 minutes to an hour to reach the top, depending on fitness and how often they stop for photos.
From the top, you’ll see the dune sea stretching away inland and, on a clear day, the coast.
Coming down is the fun part. Many people run or slide straight down the steep face.
Sandboarding and Other Activities
Sandboarding at Dune 7 itself is not allowed, however the quad bike center nearby offers sandbaording at other dunes in the area.
Tips for Visiting
- Go early or late: The sand gets very hot in the middle of the day, and the light is better for photos in the morning and late afternoon.
- Bring water: There’s little shade on the dune itself.
- Wear sunscreen and a hat: The sun reflects off the sand.
- Protect your gear: Fine sand gets into cameras and phones easily.
- Stay on the dune: Respect the desert environment and take all your rubbish with you.
Combine It With
Dune 7 is on the way into Walvis Bay from Swakopmund and the airport, so it’s easy to add to your day. Pair it with the flamingos on the lagoon and the salt pans, then head to the Waterfront for a meal at Anchors Restaurant or Dockside Seafood & Grill.
