Kayaking with Seals in Walvis Bay: A Beginner’s Guide

Paddling alongside curious Cape fur seals is one of the most unforgettable things you can do in Namibia. And you don’t need any kayaking experience to try it. Here’s everything a beginner needs to know.

Where Do You Kayak?

Trips take place at Pelican Point, the sand spit that shelters Walvis Bay. You paddle on the calm, sheltered side of the peninsula, close to the seal colony.

What Happens on a Tour

  1. Early start: Tours usually begin early in the morning, when the water is calmest.
  2. 4×4 transfer: A scenic drive along the lagoon and past the salt pans, with stops for flamingos.
  3. Safety briefing: Your guide explains how to paddle and what to expect.
  4. On the water: Paddle out toward the seals. Young seals often swim right up to the kayaks.
  5. Warm drink: Many tours finish with coffee, tea or a snack before the drive back.

Is It Safe for Beginners?

Yes. Tours are guided, the kayaks are stable (often double kayaks), and the water on the sheltered side of the point is usually calm. Life jackets and waterproof gear are normally provided.

What to Wear

  • Warm layers under any waterproof gear provided
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A hat

Leave valuables behind, and use a waterproof pouch for your phone.

Seal Etiquette

Let the seals come to you. Don’t touch or feed them, and follow your guide’s instructions to keep a respectful distance from the colony.
