Long Beach and Dolphin Beach: Coastal Stops Between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay

The coastal road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is one of the most beautiful short drives in Namibia. Along the way are two beach settlements that are well worth a stop: Long Beach (Langstrand) and Dolphin Beach.

Long Beach (Langstrand)

Long Beach is a small holiday settlement about halfway between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. It’s known for its wide, quiet beach and its setting between the ocean and the dunes.

  • Walk the beach: The long stretch of sand is ideal for a stroll, especially in the early morning or at sunset.
  • Watch the waves: It’s a popular spot for surfers and for fishing from the shore.
  • Photography: The dunes rise right behind the beach, making for striking photos.

Dolphin Beach

Dolphin Beach is closer to Walvis Bay and is popular with local families, especially on weekends and holidays. As the name suggests, dolphins are sometimes seen in the surf.

  • Picnics and braais: It’s a favourite place for a family day out by the sea.
  • Beach walks: The beach is great for a walk and some fresh sea air.

Is It Safe to Swim?

The Atlantic here is cold, and currents can be strong. Swim only where it’s safe, stay close to the shore, and never swim alone. Most visitors enjoy the beaches for walking and relaxing rather than swimming.

When to Go

The beaches are pleasant all year. Mornings are often foggy, and afternoons can be windy, so late morning is usually the best time for a relaxed stop. Sunsets over the ocean can be spectacular.

Plan Your Drive

Both beaches are right on the coastal road, so you can stop at one or both on your way to the Waterfront. Take the faster road into Walvis Bay in the morning for a boat trip, then return along the coast in the afternoon with stops at Dolphin Beach and Long Beach.

Before heading home, stop at the Waterfront for sundowners at Pirates Wreck Sports Bar & Grill or dinner at Anchors Restaurant.
